Task 4a – Professional Inquiry Questions

After thinking about possible professional inquiry questions, I have come up with the following set of questions, which I have a high interest in.

1. Different styles of techniques within dance, and which, if any, are correct?

2. How do you go about getting and organizing auditions? (The audition process).

3. What inspires a dancer to dance?

4. What is the meaning behind movement within choreography and what effect it has on your emotions?

5. Why is the male dancer a vital part to the artistic world?

These questions highlight a broad range of direction in which my inquiry may go.  The main aspect of the questions listed, emphasizes the route of higher education with a focus on the mature student and the cross over between student and professional.

  1. Hi Jacob,

It is great to see that you have a wide range of interests at this stage and through development of these questions I am sure you will find a more defined route for your inquiry.

Question 1 - I personally don't think it is fair to say that any dance style is 'correct'. Perhaps you could argue that Ballet is the foundation of all dance styles therefore this carries the most importance, but I think this is quite a controversial statement.

Question 2 - This definitely highlights the importance of self management within a performer. Not only do we have to have the skills required as a Performer we need to have the managerial skills, after all we are selling our product...US!! This can also link back to Module 1, utilising all the web 2.0 sources out there in order to optimise our chances of gaining those all important audition. How can we improve our Professional Practice?

Question 3 - This is going to be an extremely personal question. For me it is the music and the story behind the dance. I am primarily a Musical Theatre Performer, therefore I have to be acting and telling a story in order to convey the emotion within the dance. It is this storytelling and also the music which inspires me. The ability to take someone on an emotional journey without saying a word :)

Looking forward to reading more on your developing questions :)

  2. Hey Jo,
I feel question 2 would be a much more interesting inquiry, as I am still discovering new ways to help promote the product being sold!
Question 1 was aimed more towards technique alone, rather than dance style, but all dance styles have many techniques. In Ballet there are many techniques such as Vaganova, Cicchetti, Balanchine, Cuban etc. to name a few, all of them have reasons behind doing certain things, yet argue they they are right and the other is wrong.
When in reality, they are all correct, its just they way the movement is taught, and finding what works best for you.

  3. Hi jacob,
Really interested in question 3 'what inspires a dancer to dance' I have noticed over the last few years at my dance school that during the adolescence years students stop dancing altogether or change from classical to hip hop etc. I want to know why this happens but in order to know why i will need to know what inspired them in the first place.

  4. There are many reasons for young children to stop dancing. I think a good area to look at would be peer pressure, highlighting boys who completely have the wrong idea of dance. At the studio where I dance, a boys exercise program was opened to the public for free, hoping that some of the boys would become interested in dance. The course is mainly physical exercise and games, but involving some dance movement. So far quite a number of the boys have joined the dance classes such as Jazz, Hip Hop and Tap! In all a great success!
