Task 4a Continued…

I feel that as my inquiry goes on, I keep coming back to the same subject, technique.

Technique is something I feel is very important to a dancer, as without technique, how can we avoid injury, clarify styles of dance and use it to advance the way our body’s work.

I want to look at how technique is used to avoid injury, the different styles of technique, why each practitioner differs in opinion and how technique has developed to create new dance forms.

I feel it is important to understand technique in dance, as without it, we can cause serious harm to our body and make dance terrible to watch from a spectators point of view!

I have formed a new SIG about technique which I feel can fall into the category of education, as I think it is important for young people to fully understand what is correct in dance in order for the dance form to develop.

  1. Thanks Joseph - find more comments on Task 4a Continued. Technique as a topic area to create new art forms is an interesting idea - relates to your neuroscience blog and the study of movement now possible through modern technology.

  2. Thanks Jacob - more about your topic area and inquiry questions...

Is there a link between technique and why dancers invent new dance forms? You have mentioned before your knowledge of dance history and progression...

    earlier questions were
    1. Different styles of techniques within dance, and which, if any, are correct?
    2. How do you go about getting and organizing auditions? (The audition process).
    3. What inspires a dancer to dance?
    4. What is the meaning behind movement within choreography and what effect it has on your emotions?
    5. Why is the male dancer a vital part to the artistic world?

You have also been able to think through some of the audition themes with a colleague with questions such as What do I need for an audition?

Generally people do have a range of ideas for their topics - all of the above are work related and show a real interest in many aspects of the profession. What are you really interested in at this point of view - what do you want to find out?

In your 'want and Need' blog http://jacob-hughes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/want-and-need.html you seemed to combine the idea of invention as they related to technical requirements and also the audition process!

Whatever your final inquiry topic - it needs to contain some aspects of theory - dance theory , professional practice theory, the theory of choreography... The speakers at the conference I just went to inferred that today's artists need to deliver multiple strands of knowledge to practice. Continue thinking about the your range of topics and see if any elements emerge or merge for a final choice. SIGs and more discussion with colleagues sounds helpful.
